Where’s the most unusual place you’ve done it? Outdoors? At the theatre? A disused shop window…? You’re obviously nowhere near adventurous enough if you’re not having multiple artistic encounters in the most unusual of spaces.
Art in Unusual Spaces is a new cultural initiative in Leeds. It links independent curators, landlords, artists and businesses throughout the city with artists who create new work to be shown in otherwise unused spaces: shop windows, hoardings, statue plinths. Just about anywhere is a possible exhibition space.
The project launched on 3 December at the Merrion Centre and gets off the ground with four window-based exhibitions. You might spot work documenting the gem of Leeds’ cultural calendar – Light Night – in Leeds Shopping Plaza. Or, in the window of 42 New Briggate, see Short Shorts – a show reel of seriously short artist films that last between seven and 30 seconds. Beauty in the Ordinary – photographs taken by communities in Leeds, showing the hidden qualities of the everyday – can be found on Lands Lane. And, saucily, Curiosity Shops will be viewable through peepholes in various units in the Merrion Centre. Keep an eye out for that.
“Through events like Light Night, Leeds has a tradition of putting ‘art in unusual spaces’ for one night a year. This exciting new programme will celebrate the creative wealth of our city all year round. This is an innovative way of working with landlords and businesses which will allow local people to make a truly unique contribution to their own city centre,” said councillor John Procter.
Art in Unusual Spaces gives more people the chance to see interesting artwork in new spaces, not just the four walls of a traditional gallery. And it’ll be a refreshing way to have a cultural quickie while traipsing around the city centre shops on a Saturday. Art in Unusual Spaces will continue to create new exhibitions all over the city.
