While Ray Charles is one of the best known names in jazz and soul, the musicians who played alongside him and were central in the musical legacy he left behind, have seldom achieved anywhere near the level of respect or reverence as their band leader.
A Tribute to Atlantic Jazz, an ensemble put together by saxophonists and Leeds College of Music alumni James Russell and Jim Corry, aims to redress this balance by paying tribute to Atlantic Records. In the 1960s and 70s, Atlantic embraced the period of soul jazz and brought with it a new generation of musicians.
James Russell (baritone sax) is well respected as a songwriter, composer, performer and producer who’s performed with a range of bands and recently contributed horn parts to the forthcoming Jamiroquai album. Jim Corry (alto sax) has toured and played with Corinne Bailey Rae, Haggis Horns, Mark Ronson and Daniel Merriweather and has played at Live Earth, the Brit Awards, ‘Later… with Jools Jolland’, ‘Oprah’ and many more.
The line-up on the night will be completed by Stuart McDonald (tenor sax), Steve Parry (trumpet), Andy Cholerton (piano), Richard Hammond (bass) and Chris Sykes (drums).
