Pick'N'Mix Tony Leighton

Every fortnight the top local DJs give us their top five tunes

Pick'N'Mix: Tony Leighton

Tony Leighton is a man with a real passion for music and indie music in particular. He spins his mixes of the finest guitar-based tunage at The Session, every Friday night at The Cockpit.

‘I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor’ – Arctic Monkeys (Domino)
“I love this track (or anything from their first two albums) because of the beat, the bass, the tune, the incisive social commentaries and that awesome Yorkshire outlook. These lads sure do rock and poke a weary finger at all that is involved in living, loving and going out these days.”

‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’ – Bob Dylan (Columbia)
“Bob is the Marmite of music isn’t he? Well I love both Dylan and Marmite. This is one of his most danceable tunes, and, well, if you can’t dig that, you aint got the jive and you a turkey!”

‘Sugarfoot’ – Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears (Lost Highway Records)
“It sounds like James Brown; it’s one of those rare dancefloor phenomenons where no-one knows it but everyone dances. I urge everyone who reads this to take a listen then buy the album because you will love it.”

‘Love is Ending’ – The Charlatans (Independent)
“I love this track (and every song this band have ever released) because they are the ones who got me into the music that I love. They are rock’n’roll survivors bridging so many scenes and they just keep on keeping on. Nervous breakdowns, jail, death, accountants ripping them off – nothing can stop them.”

‘Rock n Roll Star’ – Oasis (Creation)
“It’s big, brash, confident and cocky. Despite my obvious youthful good looks, I was there at the Duchess of York pub (now a Hugo Boss shop) when they played back in April 1994 and I met the finest front man of our times. He was a real gent, good laugh and top lad and said to me ‘you look like Beck’. Oasis are never far from any DJ set I play.”
