Top Banana is something of a Leeds nightlife institution, having been set up in 1991 and taking on a residency at the legendary Town & Country Club two years later. After we heard news of the night’s return to its old stomping ground at the O2 Academy this fortnight, we caught up with Piers and the rest of the Top Banana team to find out their top picks.
‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ - Depeche Mode (Mute)
“I saw them live in Milan at the San Siro Stadium a couple of months ago in front of 65,000 people. They’re still an awesome band, still going strong!”
‘Planet Earth’ - Duran Duran (EMI)
“A great debut single from a band that really defined the 80s, from the New Romantic clothing to the epitome of excess, they did it all!”
‘Like A Prayer’ - Madonna (Sire)
“She upset the Catholic Church with the video, but it was a great pop song that still stands the test of time.”
‘Baggy Trousers’ - Madness (Teldec)
“A school anthem of the 80s! They’re playing at the O2 Academy this December - it’s going to be an amazing gig.”
‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ - Rick Astley (RCA)
“The pinnacle of Stock Aitken Waterman, and of course the legendary Rick roll - a must!”
