Netball gets fierce!

This month netball gets a makeover. Following the success of Back to Netball programmes in West Yorkshire this year, Leeds City Council, England Netball and West Yorkshire County Netball Association have teamed up to bring you FastNet. This new take on the school sports classic is aimed at bringing former players back into the game and, according to Lisa Mulherin of Leeds City Council, the sport is aimed particularly at “women who have played netball but given up due to other commitments”.
These ladies may be in for a shock, however, as gone are the days of slyly pulling pigtails and eating orange segments at half time. FastNet is netball with a kick: quick and intense, the sport makes bigger demands both physically and tactically. Its exciting twist on the rules and flash promotion looks set to draw the attention of a younger following. Sian Foley of England Netball notes “netball can be seen as a very traditional game, but while the sport is growing quicker than ever, FastNet will help us attract a new audience”. It is hoped that the success of FastNet will mirror that of other redesigned sports such as five-a-side football and Twenty20 cricket, boosting netball’s popularity just in time for the 2012 Olympics.
