Library set to hit the city's streets

News: New Children's Mobile Library Launching in Leeds

A new mobile library is preparing to hit the roads, the seventh addition to the fleet of mobile libraries provided by Leeds City Council’s library and information services.

The vehicle, which is 28 feet long, is unique in that it is designed for readers aged under 12 and their families, featuring over 1,500 items specifically for children, such as picture books, homework help and popular story books. Not forgetting their parents and carers, the vehicle will also contain a selection of information books and novels, a cosy seating area for storytelling, a pull-out awning to extend outside the vehicle, as well as public internet access.

The new library is due to go into action in September, when it will begin to visit children’s centres, early years settings and nurseries across Leeds, though it will be seen at festivals and community events in the coming weeks before its official launch.

These libraries encourage people to visit the library by making the facilities accessible to people who cannot attend their local library. Their at home services take the mobile libraries straight to people’s doorsteps, providing print and audio books to those who are unable to leave their homes. The larger community mobiles also travel to more rural areas surrounding the city which do not have a local branch. These services are supplemented by mobiles for older people, which travel to sheltered housing schemes and residential homes, carrying over 1,500 items including large print books specifically for the elderly.

All of the mobiles are currently in the process of a re-vamp, being given modern and colourful new liveries much like the one sported by the new children’s library. The larger mobiles are also being fitted with free public internet access.

Councillor Adam Ogilvie, Leeds City Council executive member for leisure, said: ‘‘The distinctive new colour scheme is really eye catching, so I would encourage anyone who has not been on a mobile library for many years to take a look as the level of services they can now provide is amazing.’‘
