News National Media Museum Set to Open New Internet Gallery

Construction of innovative space is underway

We live in a world where the internet plays a large role in many of our lives, yet most of us are not aware of its exact origins or what its future might hold. So the Life Online gallery, due to open on 30th March at the National Media Museum, looks set to be an exciting addition to this already great museum.

The new gallery will aim to educate its visitors through participation, exhibitions and online presence, exploring different themes such as global communications, online identity and digital communities and businesses.

The £2m project will consist of two spaces in the museum, a permanent gallery on the ground floor covering the history of the internet and what is to come, and an exhibition space featuring experimental temporary exhibitions exploring the continuously shifting relationship between society and the web.

The first exhibition, entitled [open source], focuses on the open source culture of sharing and collaborating online while also identifying possible threats to net neutrality that could signify the beginning of the end for online culture as we currently know it. Life Online will be powered by interactive contributions from both physical and virtual visitors.

This new installation certainly looks to be a world first and will provide future generations with an archive of information on our relationship with the internet in the 21st century. Tom Woolley, curator of new media at the museum, said: “We have been planning for this gallery for a long time and it is fantastic to see the building work commence for our new permanent gallery Life Online.

"There are many exciting milestones ahead as we build towards the gallery opening in March and we look forward to sharing the finished gallery with our visitors.”

In addition to the gallery, there will be a learning space offering an array of workshops and events looking into the production of online content and various issues related to the way in which we use the internet.
