News Market Shoppers In Leeds Get 'Real Deal'

Council aims to stamp out fake goods

Leeds City Council has announced it is set to sign the Real Deal charter as part of a national scheme to bar the trade in counterfeit goods from markets across the UK. Markets in Leeds will be able to display the Real Deal logo, which will show them to be an example among UK markets and act as a warning to those who may attempt to flout the trading rules.

Liz Bales, Director General for the Industry Trust for IP Awareness, which initiated the Real Deal campaign, said: “By signing up to the Real Deal charter, Leeds City Council is sending a clear ‘keep out’ message to counterfeit con-men, helping to ensure that these markets are safe, and fair venues for people to shop and to trade. The hard work of the markets team and West Yorkshire Trading Standards deserves to be applauded.”

Markets are a British tradition that for a long time have brought vibrancy to local communities, providing good deals for shoppers and stimulating local economies. Yet markets are not continually monitored and as such they provide the perfect opportunity for those trading illegally. The Real Deal campaign ensures local authority trading standards and market operators work together to keep their markets free from criminal activity.

Councillor Mark Dobson, Leeds Kirkgate Market champion, added: “It is fantastic that we are able to sign up to the Real Deal partnership with West Yorkshire Trading Standards to protect our market businesses and customers. We look forward to continuing to work together closely to keep our markets free from counterfeit and other illicit goods.”

Leeds Kirkgate Market is renowned for a number of reasons. As well as being the largest under-cover market in the country and home to over 800 traders, it is the proud birthplace of Marks & Spencer, and following its renovation in the early 1990s it became a Grade I listed building. The outlook is bright for this grand piece of Leeds history, with the Council suggesting that the Real Deal charter will help to ensure the popularity of Leeds markets for many years to come.
