Leeds wine bar Lazy Lounge is celebrating its inclusion in the shortlists of two national industry awards. The West Point-based bar has earned recognition from the judges of Imbibe magazine’s first Louis Roederer Greatest List On Earth competition, while also being nominated in the Best Newcomer category of the Drinking Out Excellence Awards sponsored by Harpers Wine & Spirits Trade Review earlier this year.
Speaking of the achievements, owner Kristian Jordan said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to have been nominated for these two awards. It’s great to be recognised by experts for what we’ve aimed to achieve here and it makes the hard work of our whole team worthwhile.”
The Harpers Wine & Spirits Trade Review Drinking Out Excellence Awards recognise the restaurants, bars and pubs with the best wine and spirits offerings in the UK. Lazy Lounge was the only bar outside London to be nominated in the Best Newcomer category. The Louis Roederer Greatest List On Earth competition, which is to be announced in the autumn, aims to identify the UK bar with the best wine list. Lazy Lounge was one of 25 entries to make it on to the shortlist, and one of only two bars from the north of England. Its list was described by Imbibe magazine as “a good choice, but never intimidating” which “fitted its audience perfectly”.
The nominations mark the second anniversary of Lazy Lounge’s opening in 2008. Mr Jordan, who owns the bar with wife Nicola, commented: “Starting up any new business is a risk at the best of times – but launching Lazy Lounge in the face of the worst recession in recent years did make it that bit more challenging! Things could have been very tough, but because we’re passionate about what we’re doing here we persevered, listened to what our customers wanted and adapted our offering, which enabled us to be successful.”
The couple say they invested years in researching their wine list, travelling extensively to produce a globally-inspired selection. They also suggest their knowledgeable staff and the bar’s relaxed ambience are the other secrets to its success, as well as a high-tech preservation system which enables them to offer over 30 wines by the glass.
Lazy Lounge now offers monthly wine tasting evenings and a wine club, and has created lunchtime and evening food menus which complement their wines. Having received recognition from industry peers, the Jordans are looking forward to continuing to make good wine accessible in the city.
