News: Leeds Arena

Though Leeds Arena isn’t scheduled to be completed until late 2012 or early 2013, plans for it are making definite progress as images of the proposed exterior design have been revealed for the first time ever. The stunning honeycomb pattern covering the exterior of the stadium will light up the city centre at dusk, as ever-changing coloured lights illuminate the striking design. The ultra-modern, artistic design and its interweaving cellular pattern were created using a mathematical algorithm called a voronoi diagram, making it the only European arena to be designed in such a way.

The illuminated honeycomb pattern will change colour depending on the event, the performing artist’s request, or the branding of whichever company acquires naming rights for the venue. Outfitted with remarkable design and a tailored appearance for every occasion, plans for Leeds Arena are dressed to impress. Leader of Leeds City Council, Councillor Keith Wakefield, said on the subject, “The design has been carefully chosen to ensure the building is an exciting addition to the Leeds night-time scene.” Beyond that, it will help attract visitors, “boost the evening economy and act as a commanding gateway to the city centre,” Wakefield added. The venue will be built on Claypit   Lane’s 5.1 acre site.

The proposed exterior takes into account the opinions of nearly 1,000 Leeds residents who participated in the public consultation regarding its design over one year ago. Desire for a unique building, environmentally responsible features, glazed panels, outdoor seating sections and good acoustics were mentioned. Responding to the community’s requests, arena operators SMG Europe and arena specialists Populous, in conjunction with engineering designer Jacobs, have incorporated a roof that recycles rainwater to be used in running the building, heating from air source pumps, and an area with a green sedum roof to help enhance the environment into their design.

Entertainment value was also a primary concern in the planning of Leeds Arena’s interior design; the super theatre fan shape design ensures every seat of the 12,500 in total will have a clear view of the central stage. The longest distance from the stage is only 68 metres, 25-40% less than at a conventional arena. Other features will not fail to disappoint, including 24 executive boxes, 4,000 square metres of public space, flexible seating layouts and a large restaurant. At maximum capacity, the arena will accommodate 13,500 sitting/standing guests and is set to become a premier attraction of Yorkshire. Councillor Richard Lewis said, “The internal design will give the best spectator experience of any arena in the country in terms of sightlines and acoustics. Add this to the vibrant, memorable external design, and we have a venue that is of international significance.”

Managing Director and Senior Vice President of SMG Europe John Sutherland agreed, citing Leeds Arena as a distinctive landmark for the north of England and beyond. “This is not just another ‘me-too’ arena which you can find in many cities,” he said. “The concept and innovative design will make Leeds one of the most exciting and innovative performance spaces in Europe. I am confident that under SMG’s management, the Leeds Arena will be one of the top 10 places to play in the world, attracting top class artists and up to a million visitors each year.”

Jan Anderson, Executive Director of Environment for Yorkshire Forward, commented: “This is an opportunity for Yorkshire and the Humber to significantly enhance its visitor offer and to increase visitor numbers. In turn, the region will benefit from increased spending in areas such as retail and restaurant visits, hotel stays and extended weekend breaks. The addition of the Leeds Arena to the region’s other fantastic venues will help to grow our profile as a location for major cultural and sporting events.”

Leeds won’t have to wait until the project is completed to reap its benefits, though. Construction of the massive venue, set to start later this year, will bring more than 500 construction jobs to the city; a much-needed boost to the local job market. Once the stadium has been completed and is in working order, it is expected to produce revenue for the local economy to the tune of £25.5m.

A 3-minute animation showing the arena in action has been commissioned, featuring a soundtrack by local Leeds band Escort Knights. To watch the video, visit the Leeds City Council website.
