On 24th June, Leeds and its suburbs plays host to the Olympic Flame. The torch arrives in Ilkley just after 4.30 pm and then visits Headingley Stadium an hour later before going through Potternewton at 6.10 pm. And then onwards to East End Park. It then travels out to Temple Newsham where the evening celebrations will be taking place.
As one of the elements of the free event to be held at Temple Newsham to mark the iconic Olympic flame arriving in Leeds, the audience will be asked to take part in a mass-participation dance the scale of which has never been seen before in the city. During the period Leeds has also been chosen as the official training base for Russia’s diving team. The divers will be based at the Aquatics Centre at the John Charles Centre for Sport in the run-up to the games. The Dutch swimmers are also basing themselves in the city plus a number of athletes from the USA, Serbia and Canada.
A number of athletes from the City will be participating in the Olympics down in London in July & August. Firstly there are the Brownlee brothers from Bramhope. Alistair and Jonathan are medal hopefuls in the Triathlon which takes place on Tuesday 7th August in Hyde Park. Alistair won the 2011 ITU world triathlon title after winning the Grand Final in Beijing. Jonathan has won two international tournaments this year in America and Madrid.
Two female athletes from the Leeds area are Debbie Flood who will be competing in the Women’s Eights and Lizzie Armistead in the cycling. Debbie, from Guiseley, is a three-time former world champion who won silver at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics and is hoping to go one better in 2012. She was placed sixth overall in the British senior team trials and won a bronze and a silver in the 2011 World Cup series.
Lizzie who hails from Otley is currently riding with the AA Drink-Leontien.nl cycling team and was a member of the gold medal winning team pursuit squad at the 2009 Track World Championships, her second appearance at a senior world championship event. She was also a silver medallist at the commonwealth games in Delhi in 2010.

Other competitors from Leeds taking part in the Olympics are diving stars Sarah Barrow and Jack Laugher. Also there is Nicola Adams in the boxing, Umar Hameed in Athletics, Siroos Saeed in Swimming, Ashleigh Ball in the Women’s hockey team and Jack Oliver in the Weightlifting. In the Paralympics Leeds competitors include Karen Drake, in the Hand Cycling and Paraplegic Adventurer, Claire Cashmore in Swimming, and Kim Baybell in Table Tennis.

Nice to see the Leeds Guide back, it would be even better if you had spelt Temple Newsam correctly.
