On Thursday 17th November Santa and his reindeers are taking a break from the nippy winds of Lapland to spend the day in sunny Leeds. Santa and co are spending the day on Briggate from 11am, before heading to Leeds Kirkgate Market, elves in tow, at 4.30pm.
Santa will of course be right at home in the Christmas-clad market, which has been spruced up with 4km of festive bunting and a giant outdoor Christmas tree. He’ll be opening the official city centre Santa’s Grotto, marking the start of the Festival Leeds programme – and shopaholics will be delighted to hear the season of late night shopping is upon us.
Councillor Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council executive board member with responsibility for city development, said: “Now that all the festive lights have been switched on, it really is the countdown to Christmas. The city centre is a great place to shop, and the late-night opening on a Thursday will allow people the extra time to stock up on all their Christmas presents.”
City centre shops, including Kirkgate Market, will open until 8pm every Thursday in the run-up to Christmas. From 23rd until 26th November, a Moroccan market will also be open at the outdoor market area at Kirkgate. In true seasonal spirit, free city centre parking in council parking spaces will even be available from 6pm on Thursdays.
Christmas shopping may (or may not) be fun for the big kids, but exasperated little ones can rest assured there’ll be some treats to lift their spirits. Magicians and stilt walkers will be found roaming around the marketplace on Thursday evenings, providing children’s entertainment – so it won’t all be trailing around after mum and dad. Kids can also persuade parents to take them for a visit to Santa’s Grotto by telling them grotto-goers will receive two hours free parking at the NCP Car Park on a Thursday evening between 4 and 8pm.
Real Radio are running a competition on Thursday 17th, offering kids the chance to win a ride in Santa’s sleigh from Briggate to the market. As part of the fun and festivities at the market, there will also be a postbox installed for children to post their letters to Santa up until 17th December.
The Festive Leeds programme, which starts this week under the banner ‘Yule Love Leeds at Christmas’, is sure to have something to get everyone in a very merry mood, with activities such as creative craft workshops at Leeds Art Gallery, a White Rose Music Festival at Harewood House from 17th until 19th November, and the deli market at Kirkstall Abbey on 26th November.

This article calls for some lyrics:
“I’m gonna leave the world outside
Spend my money
‘Cause it’s gonna be a real good night
We’re gonna have a real good night
Let’s go late night shopping
High street bopping
Late night shopping on a Thursday
And a whole lot more on her birthday
Flash dirty cash
I’m splashin’ out
Share it with the family
Give the whole rationale
Keep the level up while the rest flashin’ out”

On a serious note, kudos to the website designers for implementing a live preview feature as the comment is being typed. Haven’t seen that on any other website! What technology is being used to implement it, out of interest?
