Held this year at Potternewton Park on Sunday 29th August from 12 noon, Leeds Reggae Concert is still billed as the UK’s biggest free black music event – and what better headliner than the son of the most famous reggae legend of all time?
The 35 year-old British-born reggae star won ‘Best Album of the Year’ in the International Reggae and World Music Awards held in New York earlier this year, with his latest album ‘Awake’, which he will be performing hits from at the festival. He was also recently nominated for ‘Best Reggae Album’ in the Grammy Awards.
Appearing alongside him will be Horace Brown, an American singer and producer who has worked with a host of famous rappers and R&B stars, including big names like Jay-Z, P Diddy, Mary J Blige, Faith Evans, Jodeci and Foxy Brown.
Councillor Adam Ogilvie, Leeds City Council’s executive member for leisure, stated: ‘‘The Leeds Reggae Concert is a wonderful annual event, and the organisers have again been able to attract a great line-up of performers to attend this year, so we look forward to another great day out and thousands of people enjoying the free show at Potternewton Park.’‘
The festival is proud to be running for the 24th time, one year off its silver anniversary, and is expected to attract about 25,000 visitors. Away from the main stage, the Unity Housing Association Stage is set to host an exciting variety of performers, from one of the UK’s finest gospel vocalists Roger Samuels, to the grimier Donae’o. Reggae veterans Black Slate will also be returning to the stage. The Unity Housing Association is a local business supporting this year’s concert, aiding in the provision of a big screen showing the day’s events in addition to the usual wide range of stalls and refreshments available.
The festival also supports up and coming new talent, which this year includes reggae acts Root One Band and Tuff E Nuff, soul group The Moves and The Innovation Band, who are a new Congolese group. Other entertainment will also be on offer, with breakdancers Speak to the Street, Kushi and Moneque Price Tyrone.
Red Rose, Leeds Reggae Concert Committee founder member, said: ‘‘I am so excited about this years event, the range of music that will be performed is amazing. This year promises to be the best Leeds Reggae Concert ever.’‘
So whether you’re a massive reggae fan or not, this festival is definitely worth a visit – with its eclectic mix of entertainment there’s a bit of something for everyone.
