Two new eateries have opened to add yet more flavour to the wealth of bar and restaurant options at Granary Wharf. Out of the Woods and Fazenda are the two latest ventures to take up residency at the waterside development, to the delight of foodies in the city.
Independent juice bar and deli Out of the Woods opens on the back of the success of its flagship shop just across the way at Holbeck Urban Village. Known for offering healthy alternatives to the usual café fare, including made-to-order sandwiches, cakes and smoothies made using locally sourced produce whenever possible, the owners Jon Baldwin and Ross Halliday have already added a side-venture to the mix in the form of a Christmas pop-up shop.
“We’ve been looking to open a second juice bar for a while and felt that by locating at Granary Wharf, we’d be catering for a different catchment area to our other café in Holbeck,” Baldwin says. “We really wanted a space where we could offer a large range of products, and ISIS [the developer at Granary Wharf] has given us the opportunity to open a temporary Christmas shop so it’s great to launch both in time for Christmas”.
The Christmas shop is situated in the unit next-door to Out of the Woods and will be open daily until 24th December selling the company’s bespoke range of Christmas hampers, along with cheeses, chocolates and a host of other local festive treats.
Also opening this month and adding a dash of South American spice to the mix is Fazenda, a Brazilian steak restaurant and the first of its kind in the city. The brainchild of an experienced business consortium, the restaurant is said to offer a unique dining experience. Fazenda features the continuous table service customary of Brazilian barbecues, where the customer controls the service with a green ‘go ahead, bring me more’ and red ‘dangerously full’ signalling system. Cooked by gaucho chefs in a traditional rodizio grill, the restaurant serves up 15 cuts of meat, a gourmet salad bar, authentic Brazilian side dishes and speciality South American beers and wines.
Mark Lodoacha, an investor in the restaurant and whose company Envicon is responsible for its design, said: “We love the waterside setting here at Granary Wharf and the public realm is perfect for our outdoor seating area which will overlook the canal and really come into its own in the summer. We felt that this area had a real sense of identity and that it was already a destination in itself – a trendy yet grown-up little corner of Leeds just outside the city centre.”
In recent years, Granary Wharf has developed into one of the city’s most beautiful locations. ISIS is keen to attract independent upmarket retailers and restaurants, and urban manager David Deacon says this is key to the distinctive character of the area: “The success of the commercial aspect of Granary Wharf is very much down to the fact that what we offer here is a place where independent retailers can thrive, giving visitors and residents a range of food and drink establishments that are unique and not a clone of the big-name brands in the city centre.”

We were lucky to have the opportunity to try Fazenda out pre-grand opening. Firstly the staff were ‘in training’, they seemed fully trained and up to speed to me, very helpfully and attentive waitress, if this was still training then when this place open you will be well looked after! The concept of this place I have never experienced before and it something I can’t wait to experience again. You go get your salad and sit down and ‘flip your disk’ to green and the chef’s serve you a constant stream of excellently cook prime meats! Getting bit full, then ‘flip you disk back to red’ for a rest. As we there as part of the ‘test’ week not all 15 meats were available but we must have gone through 9-10 different types, mouth watering flavours and cooked to perfection! The only ‘bad’ thing and I use the term very lightly, was the saltiness of the bacon in which the some of the chicken and steak was wrapped in. But not having Brazilian before I can’t say if this is traditional, it did not stop me having several pieces of each, just needed good few glasses of water to quench thirst later on! Don’t by any means let this put you off, it’s the only thing I can find to say that ‘constructive criticism’ and if that’s the only thing I can find to moan about you can be sure your going to have a good evening! To anyone who is having a quick look at this place and thinking about going then you won’t be disappointed! The only advice I can offer you is don’t think of this place as a quick bite before a night out, it an evening out in it’s self and you will roll out of there stuffed and needing a rest! We will defiantly be revisiting this place and sure you will enjoy. Not another place like this in Leeds!*****
