As we reported in October 2009, Carlsberg UK, the owners of Tetley’s are closing down the iconic Tetley’s brewery in Leeds and moving the production of the beers to new sites.
Tetley’s, which has a history in Leeds dating back to 1822, will see its production split between two breweries. The cask ale will be taken away from Yorkshire and brewed by Marston’s, a major national brewer based in Wolverhampton with a number of other sites across the county.
However, the Tetley’s Smooth Flow kegged beer will continue to be brewed in Yorkshire, but its production will move out to Molson Coors’ Tadcaster brewery.
So, while Tetley’s will still own the historic beers, they will be brewed under license by two different breweries outside Leeds - leaving the Leeds site presumably set for demolition.
“We looked at all realistic options in Yorkshire to brew Tetley’s cask,” Andy Hume, Brewery Director at the Leeds Tetley Brewery told Yorkshire Evening Post, “however there was not the suitable capacity available. As such we needed to find the best option outside of Yorkshire in terms of quality and processes and Marston’s provides this. Over the coming months our Tetley’s brew masters will work closely with our partners, using the same ingredients and recipe to ensure they deliver the same great beer it always has been.”
For now the brewery will keep running, with plans for it to have been run down and closed by 2011.
The Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA) have been campaigning for Tetley’s to be kept in Leeds and brewed, if not by Carlsberg, by another local brewer. John Rowe the Chair of Leeds CAMRA said: “it’s a very sad day and a sad demise for the city of Leeds. I can only see Tetley’s losing all the hold on the beer market in the Leeds region. The Tetley drinkers of Leeds will not accept beer brewed in Wolverhampton or whichever other brewery that might brew it in.”
News of the smooth flow staying in Yorkshire does nothing to appease Rowe. “The smooth flow is of no interest to me whatsoever,” he says. “The best thing to do with smooth flow is to pour it straight down the drain.”
So what does the change mean to Leeds? The worst news is job losses. It also means the loss of an iconic building and an iconic brand moving out of Leeds. And, on a more frivolous note, it means we no-longer get that lovely smell of mashing malts across the city (a blessing for those who hate the smell, a real shame for those who love it).
Whether you drink Tetley’s or not, the people of Leeds should feel a real sense of pity that a famous and historic brand will now more-or-less lose all its association with the city.

Although its the end of an era, Leeds is moving so fast now and Tetleys has got in the way of that. But what ever they build in its place will hopefully produce more jobs,
