News Competition for Leeds Photography Students to Display Work in City Centre Hotel

Winning work set to go on display at Park Plaza's newly refurbished City Square hotel

Photography students at Leeds College of Art have been given the opportunity by Park Plaza Hotels to permanently display their work in the company’s newly refurbished hotel in the city.

The competition has seen more than 700 entries whittled down to just 78, with the talented photography students vying for the chance to have their pictures adorn the Park Plaza hotel on City Square, which is undergoing a £2m refurbishment. And as an added bonus, the lucky winners are also being offered a two-night stay in a European Park Plaza Hotel of their choice.

The 10 winning photographs will be chosen by a public vote from three categories: Yorkshire Hospitality, which aims to capture the people of Leeds and will see six winners’ work displayed in the hotel corridors; Icons of Leeds, in which two winners will explore the city’s history, heritage and architecture, to be exhibited in the hotel’s guest rooms; and Wild Yorkshire, which will also see two winners cover the region’s wildlife and stunning scenery in the hotel’s suites.

Adrian Davies, course leader at Leeds College of Art, said: “This is a great opportunity for our students to get involved in a specific project, incorporate a brief and capture innovative images which hotel guests will hopefully enjoy.

"We are delighted to have been asked to take part in the competition and we look forward to seeing the finalists’ work on show in the hotel at the end of the month.”

Paul Rogers, who is the general manager at Park Plaza Leeds, said: “By offering a competition to Leeds College of Art students we hoped to get some fresh perspectives on our surroundings, and already we’ve been bowled over by the results.

"From scenes capturing lunchtime at Leeds Market to a view of the River Nidd from Knaresborough Castle, the students have brought great imagination, creativity and skill to this challenge and I cannot wait to see the winners displayed within the hotel.”

The vote is open until midnight on Tuesday 31st January 2012. Visit their Facebook page and select the "Pick the Pictures" page to register yours
