Sophie Barnes finds out how you can learn more about music with Cloth Cat

Meet The...: Charity

You may not yet have heard of Cloth Cat, the organisation that set out with the intention of offering advice to those involved in the local music scene, but you soon will. In fact this interview, with Cloth Cat’s Mike Jolly, may just do the trick.

“Everything is based around music in some way, setting up your own record label, learning how to be a sound technician. Being in a band and trying to get advice on getting your music out there and on the industry can be hard.

“I’m not a musician or a techie, but just someone who’d like to encourage others. My interest lies in actually getting projects off the ground. We discuss what classes people might find relevant and interesting and then we find local professionals in that field who can lead the classes, people who others will look up to.

“I fell into this, really. I moved to Leeds and I was working at Abbey National. I had some mates who were in a band and thought I’d put them on at the Royal Park Pub, and that was a really good gig. I was getting into promoting a couple of bands, and there was this really good scheme at the Burley Lodge Centre. Once that disbanded we decided we were going to emulate what was happening there on a DIY, independent scale.

“Not that many bands make it but then maybe it’s not all about being in bands. I’d say music is a really good vehicle to get people involved and engaged in something.”
