The double headliner of Wednesday 13 and ex-Hanoi Rocks frontman, Michael Monroe, should have been a mouth-watering rock morsel. The collective appetite of Leeds gig-goers does not seem to have been whetted though. The O2 Academy is barely a third full, perhaps the smallest crowd of the year here. This may have prompted a venue move is some circumstances, but these two acts are not light packers. They have brought along a full rock and roll show and seem determined to deliver it for the small but perfectly formed gathering.
Michael Monroe is first up, and throws himself into a set as if he were playing to a packed Madison Square Gardens. He is living proof that old rockers never die, they just keep on rocking. In this case they also pick up a saxophone for dramatic solos, pump fists in the air and use long flowing bottle blonde locks to the maximum effect. The set showcases his Sensory Overdrive release, which won a classic rock award earlier in the month. The live delivery did not disappoint, with a suitably rock and roll stage trashing completing the set.
Wednesday 13 (pictured) is a quite different proposition. Schlock horror styling mixed with metal machinations make for an entertaining mix, as the former Murderdolls frontman delivers heavy slabs of metal from the dark side. The set here is reaped from Skeletons and Calling All Corpses. It is fascinatingly morbid entertainment with a hammer horror chic. The corpse laden backdrop seems understated compared to the skull staff wielding frontman, and accompanying ghoulish band members.
It is a shame that the audience isn’t bigger, but those who did make it were treated to nothing less then they would have been if the place was packed to the rafters. Both of the double headliners put on a full-on rock and roll show.
