Some artists might have been a little nervous about performing on Friday the 13th, but VV Brown needn’t have worried. Shunning superstition, her fans arrived in full force, no spirit dampened by the dismal Leeds weather.
Vanessa Brown, aka VV Brown - singer, songwriter, performer, instrumentalist and producer - put on a show which lived up her self-coined musical premise: “doo-wop indie whilst travelling on a rocket to outer space”.
After a couple of likeable, if bland, support acts, VV took to the stage, accompanied by low lighting and drum beat. Brown wore a silver mask, feather headdress and cape for her first few songs, adding to the surreal and slightly spooky intro, and the mix of stunning vocals and crowd participation set the gig off with a bang. Energy levels seemed to stay at 100% as V.V performed tracks from her 2009 album Travelling Like The Light. ‘Shark In The Water’ and ‘Crying Blood’ were well received, but new song ‘Bottles’ seemed to evoke the best response from the crowd, possibly following on from its premiere on the Later With Jools Holland Show earlier this year.
Despite the gig being perpetually up-tempo, Miss Brown didn’t say more than a few words to the audience, so those expecting some personal revelations from the face of 2009 might have been disappointed.
Musically, it was a definite A grade night. Highlights included a show-stopping cover of Coldplay’s ‘Viva La Vida’, an accomplished guitarist and improvisational use of talcum powder and a powder puff for smoky atmosphere on a budget. All in all, a V.V impressive show!
