Leeds United: United Sting the Hornets for Sixth
Other Recent Leeds United Articles
After the rampant display against Millwall heralded United’s first three points of the Championship season, The Whites were off to Vicarage Road last Saturday and another potential banana skin in the guise of Malky Mackay’s Watford. Leeds disposed of another bogie team and brushed away the cobwebs of the 2006 play-off final defeat thanks to a solid display from Kasper Schmeichel and a Watford team lacking any tangible firepower.
Richard Naylor scored his second in as many games, although his 6th minute bundle was in the correct goal this time and was enough to bring the points back home to West Yorkshire. Leeds may not have dominated the match in the same way they tamed Millwall during an emphatic first half at Elland Road two weeks ago, but the Watford crowd will have left just as frustrated, as their team’s efforts on goal made it look all too easy for Schmeichel. A pretty game it wasn’t, but it was an important and solid victory that leaves Leeds in their highest position in the Football League for three years.
Next up is Swansea at home on 11th September and in the meantime Leeds fans can enjoy the transfer window and the upcoming European Championship qualifiers. Deadline day saw a number of movers and shakers at Thorp Arch: on the way out were Lubo Michalik who heads for Carlisle on loan and Alan Sheehan who is expected to sign for Swindon Town after having his contract cancelled by mutual consent. Incoming were Honduran international Ramon Nunez, who played all of his national team’s games in the 2010 World Cup, and Adam Clayton, whose loan move Simon Grayson has made permanent. They both join Scottish international Ross McCormack who put pen to paper just in time to make a substitute appearance against Watford.
Time will tell if the transfer window has been used wisely as the winter months approach, and if Leeds can be in sixth place when the next window slams shut, all at Elland Road will be very happy indeed.
