Leeds United: The Getaway and Marathon Men

GILLINGHAM DEFEAT

Leeds United pulled off a remarkable magic trick this week, simultaneously pulling out a terrible performance against League One cannon fodder Gillingham whilst miraculously retaining their second placed spot in the table.

Simon Grayson was rightly angry at his team’s 30 minute capitulation against the Men o’ Kent as United went down to three soft goals within 33 minutes of the kick-off.

But with neither Swindon nor Charlton capitalising on Leeds’ lamentable performance and our Kirklees rivals Huddersfield doing us a favour against Millwall on Friday night gave Leeds a get out of jail free card.

NEXT FIXTURE: MK DONS

Let’s hope the Whites can pull something better out of the hat on Saturday entertaining MK Dons. With all our rivals playing teams from the bottom half of the table then it’s unlikely that Leeds will be given yet another second chance, so it’s vital that Leeds bounce back from the dismal showing at Gillingham if they want to be sat in the automatic places on Saturday tea-time. Only three games left, so hang on to your hats guys and gals.

PATRICK KISNORBO

The Leeds centre park is aiming for a return to fitness by October next season. The Australian’s World Cup dreams were shattered by an Achilles injury but this hasn’t stopped Paddy turning out for United’s away games. Kisnorbo’s influence this season has been more than significant and the Whites’ dip in form has coincided closely with his injury.

FITNESS COACH FOR THE LONDON MARATHON

Leeds United fitness coach Matt Pears is donning his runners this month to take part in the London Marathon. Matt is raising money for Yorkshire Cancer Research whose support helped his father recover from bowel cancer. Matt is hoping to raise £2,500 and you can join Simon Grayson and his men in donating here http://www.justgiving.com/mathew-pears-londonmarathon.

DANNY MILLS’ CHARITY SUCCESS

Last weekend saw a different kind of marathon as ex-Leeds defender Danny Mills completed the inaugural Brighton Marathon. The England capped right-back left his running shoes at home however as he covered the 26.2 miles in a wheelchair to raise awareness for spina bifida and hydrocephalus, which claimed the life of Danny’s son in 2002. The hard tackling defender crossed the line first on the day beating his predicted time by 30 minutes! You can donate to his cause at http://www.justgiving.com/dannymillswheelchairmarathon/.

HALIFAX ARE THE CHAMPIONS

And finally, a quick congratulations to fellow Yorkshire side Halifax Town who were crowned Unibond Northern Premier League Division One champions on Tuesday night. The Shaymen topped their league after a 2-2 draw with Clitheroe and can reach 100 points on Saturday against Skelmersdale.
