The rejuvenation of Billy Bremner’s statue this week was mirrored in United’s 4-1 victory at home to MK Dons of Milton Keynes. In the wake of the shock defeat at Gillingham the United talisman had been under a shroud of scaffold, but was unveiled in time for the Dons visit, complete with a surprising sprout of ginger hair.
The flame haired Scot was just in time to watch over an exuberant Leeds side bounce back in style, hitting the net four times.
Loanee Sanchez Watt stood out on the left side, twice wining tackles that led to goals and showing much Gradel-like spirit in his attitude. The young Arsenal man played a perfectly weighted through ball for Becchio to expertly finish past the oncoming keeper and set Leeds on course for their most emphatic result in months. Despite poor set piece defending allowing MK Dons back into the game, Gradel added a second after Leeds pressure before Beckford joined the score sheet in style with a flying volley and a late penalty.
The Elland Road faithful were duly appreciative of the victory and can head into the crunch game at Charlton with a touch of added confidence. The four goals were important too, and with a little help from Leyton Orient’s consolation goal at Millwall, they brought United’s goal difference on par with the Lions, a figure that could be all important come the last day of the season.
With just two games to go, the possibility of Championship football creeps nearer and if results favour the Whites then Leeds could find themselves celebrating promotion on Saturday night if United beat Charlton and Millwall lose against Tranmere. Similarly, Saturday’s results could see the race for second place go right to the wire.
The match against Charlton will be aired live at Elland Road as fans hope for both victory over the Addicks and also win and good news from Birkenhead.
