Leeds Issues: Discover More About Leeds

Leeds’ very own sightseeing bus and boat tour launched last fortnight. Encompassing some of the best features of the city, the ‘hop on, hop off’ open top double-decker bus will take you on a five mile guided tour through Leeds. Sights include the Royal Armouries, Millennium Square, the Kirkgate Market and the Corn Exchange, as well as a fantastic view of the beautiful architecture as seen from a completely different perspective.

There are 12 stops along the route, giving visitors the opportunity to explore each area before hopping back on the next bus. Stop off at the Royal Armouries Museum and take a Leeds City Cruise on ‘The Black Prince’, taking in the sights of the waterways that formed an integral part of the industrial prosperity of the city. With three stops, the boat has a capacity for fifty people and offers a calm and sophisticated way of exploring Leeds. Dine at Brewery Wharf and visit the Pannier Markets at Granary Wharf before returning to Clarence Dock, where you can discover the Royal Armouries Museum for free.

With over 14 million visitors to Leeds every year, this new venture by Welcome to Yorkshire is a great opportunity to boost the already thriving tourism industry here, which brings in over £1 billion to the city every year. Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, explains the importance of this scheme for Leeds: “this is the missing piece of the jigsaw for the tourism industry here in Leeds; it will spread spending across the city, from Granary Wharf to Millennium Square. We believe it will go a long way in enhancing the already positive image of Leeds by introducing both visitors and locals to different aspects of the city.”

The Leeds City Sightseeing bus tour and the Leeds City Cruise are both fantastic ways to discover more about the city and at only £7.50 per adult and £3.75 per child, the 24 hour ticket, which includes a free boat ticket, is great value for money.

With the increase in ‘stay-cation’ and the current unpredictability of Iceland’s volcanic ash cloud, the introduction of this fascinating tour can only be a positive addition for visitors to Leeds who choose to remain in the UK for their holidays this year, as well as for local residents who are keen to discover more about their city.

Buses will run from 22 May – 26 September. £7.50 (£5.50 concs, £3.75 children, family tickets – 2 adults and up to 3 children – £17). www.yorkshire.com
