You have played all over the world, so what is your opinion of Leeds’ nightlife scene?
I have played at Mission a couple of times and it was a blast! I hope we’ll have a great time on 12th June at Mint; I am really looking forward to it.
We’ve heard that your hectic schedule means you have to take up to 300 flights a year; any advice on how to enjoy a boring flight?
Yes, I take lots of flights during the year – well if the volcano allows me to fly. You can do a lot of things during the flight like playing with the PS portable, reading a book or a magazine, sleep… but I always try to profit from this time with my laptop by preparing some ideas about new tracks or new remixes.
Do you prefer being in the studio producing or playing DJ sets?
Both things are great and important too; it’s difficult to choose one of them. Playing music is really exciting because of the crowd’s reaction, but producing is great too, because you are creating something new, and to see how a crowd reacts to one of your new tracks whilst they are dancing is really special.
Where was the best set you ever played?
Well, it’s a little bit difficult to remember the best, but I think they would include those at Space Ibiza, Space Miami, Rock In Rio in Madrid or when I was playing as guest DJ for Madonna in her Seville concert in 2008.
What inspired you to choose music as a career?
Since I was born I have been a music lover and the first time I knew I wanted to be a DJ was seeing DJ Oscar Mulero play. I was amazed at the sound and the technique and instantly knew that that was what I wanted to do in life more than anything else.
You’ve worked with some big names such as Pete Tong, Tiesto and Santana; do you have anyone currently lined up to collaborate with?
I have recently recorded a new track with Marta Sánchez (probably the biggest Spanish pop diva). It is a cover of ‘The Rhythm Of The Night’ and I think the result is amazing.
Who would it be a dream to work with?
There are so many names…. I think David Guetta has opened up a way of collaborating between the pop and the electronic worlds, and that’s a path some of us are willing to explore further. Doing a track with Madonna or Lady Gaga could be really cool!
Who is your favourite musical figure of all time?
That’s a difficult one too; I think I’ll go for Michael Jackson.
You are an ambassador for youth AIDS charity, Dance4Life. Can you tell us a little about this?
Dance4Life is an admirable organization. They have the support of many big DJs, and I am honoured to be one of them. Their aim is to prevent AIDS among kids and young people, and I really think music is a very good way to transmit the message and reach this group.
What is next for Wally Lopez?
The summer is back and once again I will be in Ibiza every Friday at Space and also at the Space Opening Party. In June I’ll be once again at Rock In Rio in Madrid. During the coming months I will travel to lots of different countries with the Global Underground tour following the release of the mix I just did for the series. There are also good festivals in the pipeline: Creamfields Spain, Tomorrowland in Belgium, and Extrema Outdoor in Holland. Moreover, there are lots of Wally Lopez new releases that will be out soon, so watch out.
