Innovative DJ duo Cassette Jam are the exciting new residents at the Academy’s Pet Sounds night and will be taking to the decks for the venue’s New Year’s Eve extravaganza. We catch up with one half of the duo, Rory Lyons, to get the lowdown.
Is it exciting to be new residents at the Academy?
The Academy is the most exciting new venue in Leeds - the monster line-ups span numerous genres, and to be a part of that is great.
What kind of sets can we expect from you at the Academy?
A fusion of dance, rock, indie and whatever else feels right at the time!
How would you say you’ve evolved as DJs since first breaking out?
In writing our album, we spent weeks in the studio just working on material that we wanted to make that wasn’t just for the dancefloor - this really helped our sound. The album has clear influences of rock and techno in equal measures, and we were lucky to work with some fantastic vocalists such as Craig from The Sunshine Underground, Cagedbaby and Lego Johnson. So we are just starting a live tour now ahead of our album release in March 2010, so it’s looking like a good year. The first single off the album is out now - so check it out and judge for yourselves!
How do you think the Leeds music and nightlife scene compares with other cities?
Leeds is a great laugh, it’s my home town as well. I always love to come back here for a catch-up with some familiar faces. There are some great new nights happening in Leeds at the moment… one that stands out for me is Voltage Drop at the Vault. It’s a brilliant new techno/tech-house night and the guys are pushing local talent and have a quality sound.
Did you have an enjoyable time at Ibiza Rocks this summer?
Ibiza Rocks is an awesome concept and it’s been really flourishing for the past few years - and it’s an honour to be part of such a cutting-edge brand and night.
What’s the strangest place you’ve ever DJ’d?
A billionaire’s bar in Moscow!
Where do you like to go out in Leeds on a night off?
Viva Cuba for food, most definitely - then I probably go to the Academy for gigs more so than anywhere else in Leeds.
What would you be doing if you weren’t DJs?
I want to give you a big profound answer, like I would be a neurologist… but I would probably be an unemployed virgin!
What would you like for Christmas?
Geek answer: EL8X Distressor. Non-geek answer: a puppy!
What are your new year’s resolutions?
Drink less sambuca, quit smoking and invade Papua New Guinea.
