You’d be forgiven for thinking The Old Romantic Killer band had been kicking around Leeds for ages now, when in fact they’ve only been together for a year and a half. After being picked up by local label Bad Sneakers after their first show, they soon released their first 7” single and a full length record in December, they became a Leeds music mainstay.
As a two-piece with only guitarist and singer Harry Johns and drummer Greg Holland - they’re a rare commodity for a rock band. You might argue that what they lack without a bass, they make up for with the strength of the bluesy vocals from Harry and a depth that emerges from the quality of the song structure, rather than the layering of guitars.
2009 has seen the band’s profile rise with an array of good gigs: “a bunch of people thought our record was cool, which led to tours with The Sunshine Underground and The Hot Rats and stuff.”
Off the back of all that hard work they’re set to self release a new EP Island of Wolves at the end of November. Describing their new material as “more ‘poppy’ but then simultaneously more aggressive”, Harry has taken lyrical inspiration from his experiences over the last 18 months.
“There are songs about Leeds music bullshit, BMX and skateboarding stuff, girls…” he says, “but the name of the EP is based on my interpretation of how Leeds music scene works.” By which he means the difficulty in dealing with over cautious, highly confusing and sometimes false relationships people build around music scenes. “Then again, our little tour with our actual friends, Dinosaur Pile-up, may have been small in capacity compared to other tours this year but was definitely the most fun!”
Looking to the future the boys are pretty busy self releasing a single and the EP - self releasing being, says Harry, “the way to go these days”. Inevitably a string of live shows will now follow.
