With guitar classics, cutting edge beats and the odd guilty pleasure thrown in, Pet Sounds attracts a diverse mix of revellers each week. We catch up with Little Lost David to find out more.
How long have you been DJing at the Leeds Academy and how’s it been going?
I have been at the Leeds Academy since it opened last year and since then the night has gone from strength to strength - we started with a good sized crowd and have just steadily built on it every week.
How would you describe the night to a newcomer to Leeds?
The night is predominantly indie music but with loads of random tunes thrown in. We were given a very basic brief when we started to play: anything that gets a crowd going and keeps it going, without losing credibility. I think there is something for everyone at Pet Sounds.
What tunes have been particularly popular with Pet Sounds revellers lately?
That’s the best thing about Pet Sounds - the crowd are really up for anything, so one week it could be Toto’s ‘Africa’, the next Rage Against The Machine’s ‘Killing In The Name Of’ or Dizzee Rascal’s ‘Bonkers’.
What new music have you personally been getting into of late?
Outside of DJing I like slightly darker music. The latest Richard Hawley album Truelove’s Gutter is amazing, and even better live. Other than that there are a couple of unsigned acts that I’m really enjoying - Exit Calm and Neil McSweeney, for example.
How big is your record collection?
Ha ha. My record collection is huge beyond belief, but that’s not to say that it’s any good. There are records and CDs in there from when I was younger… things like Right Said Fred. Most of my CDs are now in crates in storage, as the digital age has taken over and they’ve been put into computers.
Where else have you DJ’d?
I’ve been lucky enough to have played at Plug, Leadmill, Gatecrasher, Threads, Mothership and countless other bars and clubs.
You’re also a musician yourself - are you still working on your own material?
I am working on my debut album at the minute, being produced by Jim Sclavunos, the drummer from Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, The Cramps and Sonic Youth. It’s amazing to work with someone held in such high regard in the industry, and he has challenged us enough to produce something quite special indeed.
Where did the name Little Lost David come from?
It was just an off-the-cuff remark when I played my first solo gig a couple of years ago and since then it has stuck. I just like how writers have pseudonyms and the freedom it allows the creator.
What do you get up to outside music?
I’m pretty much a geek, obsessive even, and music takes up most of my time with recording, gigging and DJing, but I must admit to enjoying good real ale in a country pub.
