Interview Jamie Fisher, LS City Records & Filth at Mint

We talk to the insiders of the Leeds nightlife scene

Interview: Jamie Fisher, LS City Records & Filth at Mint

Jamie Fisher is the new Filth resident and recently set up a new record label, LS City Records. We spoke to him about the label and his new residency.

How did you first break into the music industry?
Well my first ever DJ residency was the Doncaster Warehouse about 10 years ago now. I was only 17 and was lucky enough to work my way up the ladder there. The club has so much history, it was a very good way to get things started. Carl Cox, Lee Haslem and loads of old-skool DJ/producers started there in the 90s, so it was a special time for me.

Are you pleased with ‘Shapes’, your first release on the label?
Yeah, it’s starting to look really promising; it’s been getting good feedback every day from decent DJs; Andi Durrant from Galaxy FM is playing it weekly on his shows. It’s also had huge support from Radio 1 in Greece, which is cool and it’s got the attention of the bigger guys who are now wanting to work with us.

Which other artists will be appearing on LS City Records?
We’ve just signed a track from Richard Dinsdale, which is really cool. We’ve also got Style of Eye pencilled in for a summer release. Our main guys are Lissat & Voltaxx (Germany), Benny Royal (Netherlands), Stephan M (France), myself of course, Marc Leaf (UK), Dirty Secretz (UK), Sem Thomasson (Belgium) and - last but not least - Phillip O (Columbia).

What are the secrets to running a successful label?
First of all the music! It has got to be consistently good quality. I don’t think you need to release groundbreaking tracks every release because that’s impossible - I just think if you stay fresh, try and keep one step ahead and really work hard, anything is possible.

Are you excited to be the new Filth resident?
Yeah, things are starting to get really exciting now summer is coming up. I’ve seen Filth grow up from day one to become what it is today. I’m just really happy to be a part of something which I strongly believe in. I’m really looking forward to working with them.

What kind of sets can we expect from you at Filth nights?
Fresh pumping house music. A little bit techy, a little bit progressive, but still with a lot of energy.

Which gives you more enjoyment: producing or live DJing?
A tricky one! I think they both have totally different feelings really. I like the creative part of making music and seeing the end product, but there’s a lot of time and hard work that goes into each track, which can be frustrating. I suppose it’s the same with DJing these days, scrolling through promo after promo and hearing nothing but crap. I really do like the energy and buzz off DJing though. To answer the question, I’d say playing my own track for the first time, whilst DJing. It’s addictive.

On a night off, where do you like to go out in Leeds?
Where to start? There’s so many good places in Leeds. I love everywhere from Mint to MyHouse. I’ve had some wicked nights in Space, and also some really good nights in Mission too, but recently I can’t understand what’s happened to that place. It’s such a shame. Club nights wise, obviously I think Filth are on it. Dirty Disco is cool too. Back2Mine at MyHouse is something we should be proud of too in Leeds. Not many Sunday clubs have worked like they constantly do.

Filth, first Saturday of every month, Mint Club, 8 Harrison Street, LS1 6PA, 0113 244 3168, ‘Shapes’ was released on 8 February on LS City Records
