Interview I8NY

We speak to Ed Johnson, Matt Gorecki and Alex Pinnock from emerging quarterly club night

Alex Pinnock

"I8NY is set up to further widen the boundaries of music"

What is the appeal of the night?

I8NY is an eclectic club night for people with an eclectic taste. We provide a wide range of underground music, new and old.

The night is marketed as non-genre-specific; what is the reasoning behind this?

As the result of the rise of the internet and the accessibility to all types of music, the average music fan has a wider range of music tastes. I8NY is set up to further widen the boundaries of music.

If there is no specific genre, how would you describe the night?

If it sounds good and it hasn’t already been played to death, we’ll play it, so that you can listen to it. We have an eclectic and varied mix of musical knowledge and tastes, so you can expect a diverse range of tracks!

What’s the story behind the name of the night?

It’s pretty simple that one… Why would we heart New York when we live in and love old Yorkshire?

What mixture of music can people expect at I8NY?

Well… Gyratory System, Muddy Waters, DOP, Milanese, Disrupt, Shellac, Beefheart, Blind Willie McTell, Buddy Peace, Battles, Gil Scott-Heron, Soft Rocks, Tom Waits, Pascal Comelade, Roland Kirk, Sun Ra amongst many, many, many more.

What tracks are guaranteed to please at the night?

As above! The concept of the night – breaking the boundaries of what is usually played – means nothing will, or should, please everyone. It’s more about experiencing new things.

What does the future hold for I8NY?

Hopefully bigger and better things; as far as we’re concerned we just want to meet our heroes.
