Interview George Payne, Sky Plaza

We get a glimpse of 21st century student living

Interview: George Payne, Sky Plaza

What subject are you studying and what made you choose that course?
I’m studying physics with astrophysics. I chose physics because I studied it at A-level and really enjoyed it, and wanted to know more about it. It’s also a really worthwhile degree and can provide amazing opportunities. I’ve had an interest in astronomy since I was quite young, so it seemed the perfect degree for me.

Where are you from originally and how does it compare with Leeds?
I’m originally from Hawkhurst in Kent, so it’s very different from living in Leeds. At home, my nearest big town is about a 20 minute drive, whereas in the city centre everything is within a 15 minute walk. This is perfect for students, particularly without their own transport, because getting all your shopping is so easy.

What are your impressions of the city so far?
I’ve been living in Leeds for about a year and a half, and have really enjoyed living in the city - it’s so convenient and fun to live in the centre, and there seems to be so much to do in and around the city.

What are the best things about living at Sky Plaza?
The standard of living in the Sky Plaza is very high. It is also in a perfect location - just a 10 minute walk to the university and the city centre. The staff are also very friendly and helpful, so it’s a very easy place to live.

Have you found Leeds to be a friendly city for a student?
Leeds is a very student-friendly city, with plenty of student discounts around.

Where are your favourite places to go in Leeds?
We go to lots of great places to eat, but also the Vue cinema at The Light, and there are also great places to go just outside of the city centre, like Roundhay Park.

What do you think Leeds lacks?
Apart from a KFC in the city centre, nothing!

Will you be able to pursue your chosen career in Leeds after you finish your degree?
I’m still not decided on what I’m going to do after my degree, so who knows!

What’s your most treasured possession?
My most treasured possession would have to be my car.

There’s a stereotype of students living in messy abodes - is it true?
If it is true, I’m not part of the stereotype.
