70s disco show The Love Train is the stuff of Leeds legend, having entertained thousands of fans at the old Town & Country Club in years gone by. It’s now on its way back to the Academy for a big one-off reunion event, so we caught up with the main man himself, Brutus Gold.
Where are you from originally and how did you first come to Leeds?
Puerto Rico! I fell asleep on the bus and missed my stop.
When was the first time you took to the stage?
My 12th birthday.
What are your fondest memories of the original Town & Country Club?
Having my own reserved parking space and a hot blonde chick I met backstage once from Kirkstall. Godammit, I could never remember her name, come to think of it I never asked.
Have you been to the venue yet since it was transformed into the Academy?
I paid a visit recently to inspect the brass rubbings and gold leaf in my new dressing room.
What can we expect from the one-off reunion event?
The same atmosphere, the same jokes, the same music, the same aftershave and the same Brutus Gold, but with a much more explosive high-impact disco show, which will also feature our fabulous new singer and disco percussionist Carlito from Cuba!
Is it true you did a special performance for Inter Milan football club?
Yes, for the directors at the San Siro Stadium. It was awesome dude and they all spoke English too! Italians love the Love Train, or as they say “Il Treno Amore”.
Where else have you been performing over the past few years?
Switzerland,Germany, Italy, Paris, Dubai, St Petersburg and, er, Manchester.
What are your very favourite disco tunes?
‘Everybody Dance’ by Chic, the Gibson Brothers’ ‘Cuba’, ‘The Last Dance’ by Donna Summer, ‘Stomp’ by the Brothers Johnson, ‘Shake Your Groove Thing’ by Peaches and Herb, ‘A Fifth of Beethoven’ by Walter Murphy and ‘September’ by Earth Wind & Fire.
What are your future plans?
To put an end to the Middle East crisis (with disco music). And to stay in great shape using my Bullworker and Ronco multi-exerciser.
Finally, what’s great about Leeds in your opinion?
You always get a warm, honest welcome from friendly passionate people. “Aaaaayyyyyyy don’tcha know its the the Cultural Capital of England Man!”
