Despite seeming a million miles away - particularly from the heart of the north - Ragdale Hall is, in fact, only a jolly jaunt down the M1. You can do it in two and a half hours, and on a sunny day (like when my boyfriend and I decide to visit), it’s quite delightful, particularly when you turn into the lush fields surrounding the luxurious spa retreat and you start to truly feel as if you are, indeed, a million miles away.
After check in, we are treated to a tour of the facilities, which include a quiet room - filled with huge cushions, beds and blankets (inside which are many of the hotel’s residents curled up having a nap), to the state of the art Thermal Spa. Our room is equally fabulous, equipped with the added distraction of a DVD collection consisting of the usual action and romance films.
After being allocated a slot for lunch and dinner, we bounded down for tea like impatient children - a fresh and beautiful meal of local steak and fresh vegetables, washed down by a bottle of wine.
In the evening, the Thermal Spa was calling us. Determined to try everything, we don our swimming attire and hit the outside pool - at 9pm! It’s a fabulously liberating experience - the waterfall pool is always 34 degrees and you can enjoy it all the time whatever the weather. The Thermal Spa is just incredible - from the volcanic shower (which our tour guide calls “a bit Disney” complete with thunder and lightning affects) to the rose scented sauna. After this much relaxation, the only sensible thing to do is have a nap.
The next day we had a choice of two treatments - a facial (for me) and a fifty minute body massage (for the boyfriend) - and a choice of gym classes, all available on site and tailored to suit your sporting needs: time in the gym, perhaps, or a spot of walking. You can also choose to fill up the rest of your day in the pool and spa before your calming, slightly regrettable, drive back up to Leeds.
