If you’d have said 10 years ago that one of the most hotly anticipated films of 2010 was an adaptation of a Canadian comic book about a weedy looking twenty-something who fancies a really pretty girl then all you’d have heard was laughter. But now, as the sins of Bryan Adams and Alanis Morissette have been all but forgiven, comic books have gained a huge amount of credibility and geek chic is a seemingly unstoppable force, Scott Pilgrim’s time has finally arrived.
Pilgrim (Cera) – 22 year-old slacker, romancer and bass player for the gloriously named band Sex Bob-omb – finds himself meeting the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and getting involved in a series of fights with her seven evil exes. Trying to juggle his quest to win Ramona’s heart with a Battle Of The Bands competition and the continuing affections of his high school ex-girlfriend, the adorable Knives (Wong), Scott really has his work cut out.
Edgar Wright’s inimitable visual style works absolutely perfectly with the story and every tiny detail is meticulously attended to; the ensemble is flawlessly cast and pretty much every character (with the exception of the Katayanagi twins, who don’t seem to really do anything) has at least one excellent moment; the script is snappy, funny and endlessly quotable – but, sadly, seven is a lot of evil exes to get through and nothing can really stop so many battles from becoming a little bit ploddy after a while.
However, it’s hard to deny that it feels like the best effort anyone could have made of adapting such well-loved material, and the film is so densely packed you’ll find it impossible not to find plenty to enjoy.
