Thursday 27th May saw the Victoria Quarter host a Big Bike Ride in aid of Help for Heroes and the Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Fund. Aiming to cycle 200 miles in the day and raising £1,000 to split between the two causes, the Victoria Quarter staff joined forces with some famous faces, including ITV1’s ‘Calendar’ presenters Christine Talbot and Duncan Wood and even Ronnie the Leeds Rhino’s Rhino.
The event was created to mirror the attempts of the Yorkshire Regiment, who took part in a 10 day cycle from York to Hull through every Yorkshire Regiment freedom town, after setting off from York on Monday 24th May.
Having raised over £48.5m since the charity’s launch, Help for Heroes support troops from all parts of the British Armed Forces and who have been wounded during service. The charity is invaluable to those who require rehabilitation and the support to rebuild their careers. The Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Fund, who will also benefit from Victoria Quarter’s fundraiser, support troops specifically from the Yorkshire Regiment who have been injured while serving their country.
VQ Centre Director John Bade was at the event and said, “I think it’s really important to support these charities because sometimes the Victoria Quarter is seen as a snobbish centre and the staff want to show to the public that they are willing to put their bums on seats (in this case) and do something for the Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Fund and Help for Heroes as well as other charities throughout the year. There are people from all the shops in the centre getting involved and I’ll be getting my legs out later to cycle with Ronnie the Rhino and probably scaring the public away in the process!”
