Snappers around Leeds are in for a treat this week as Leeds hosts its first ever week in celebration of all things to do with the camera.
Happy Snappy Photo Week is taking place, from the 1st to 7th of September and the aim of the week is to celebrate photography in all its forms: both an art form and fun pastime.
During the photo week, there will be a whole selection of events to get involved in – both virtually and in the real world. Find out how to improve your own photography technique and expose yourself to some of the best photographs shot in the area and by local photographers.
Self-confessed photo fanatic Jon Eland, from Chapel Allerton, founded the not-for-profit social enterprise behind the photo week, Exposure Leeds. He runs it in his spare time with fellow enthusiasts.
He said the idea behind the week was to “encourage people to try photography, learn more or just enjoy the company of other photographers.”
Exposure Leeds, a set up by local enthusiasts, is to run events including lectures, workshops, an exhibition, photo walk and a daily photo challenge.
The week starts with a presentation from Yorkshire photographer Ian Beesley on Wednesday 1st September at Old Broadcasting House.
Thursday 2nd sees the opening of the exhibition, The Best of Leeds, at 42 New Briggate, which will continue throughout the week. It will look at how the internet affects the way we experience photography, by showing a selection of images automatically identified as interesting by the photosharing website, Flickr.
At the weekend, there will be a day of workshops for beginners who use digital cameras and photo software on Saturday 4th. Beyond Snapping is free and will feature a series of presentations and opportunities to discuss how you can do photography better, including a “photography help desk”. Alongside this you could also choose to make a camera from a matchbox.
Other events include a photowalk around Chapel Allerton on Sunday 5th, and a photography tour of Holbeck’s historic Temple Works, and night shoot.
In addition to all this you will see regular guest blog entries on our website and other Leeds community sites - along with daily photo challenges. Join in and celebrate local photography!
