A Leeds charity launches final funds bid before relocation
Feature: Carrying the Torch
Sunday 21st February saw Leeds charity The Candlelighters Trust launch their final £500,000 funding bid to aid their re-location to Leeds General Infirmary from St. James Hospital, anticipated in May 2010.
In a spectacular event at the Royal Armouries in Leeds, 150 volunteers made up of current and past patients and their families stood together to create a stop motion animation of the trust’s new logo. The launch of this bid also sees the re-launch of the trust and a new website that will publicise their work, provide a platform for support and information as well as a facility for donations.
Instigated and run by parents of patients and funded entirely by public donations, Candlelighters began over 30 years ago and has been the pre-eminent charity working with young cancer sufferers in Yorkshire ever since. With over 120 new patients travelling for treatment at the regional children’s cancer centre every year, the funds raised are needed to help fund the trust’s ongoing work in 2010, paying for essential medical equipment, nursing staff and support for the Candlelighters Children’s Cancer Research Laboratory. It will also see their ward and outpatients facilities relocated, providing essential support for parents whilst their child is treated and essential breaks for parents and siblings. It also provides outreach care in the form of their social support team, direct financial support and outreach nursing.
