The River Plate Argentinean Steakhouse down on The Calls is celebrating five years in the restaurant business with a brand-new menu and a big party later this month. Launched in 2006, the restaurant aims to promote a "relaxed, family friendly environment that’s not pretentious".
Co-Owner and General Manager Jenny Fearnley says: "Because it’s an independent it’s almost like a family-run business; we’re the complete opposite to a chain. We support local businesses and use local suppliers.
"We’re coming up to five years old now and the menu has naturally grown and developed over time, taking into consideration staff opinions, customer feedback, personal experience and knowledge of what our customer likes and what sells well. We have a wonderfully talented kitchen team. We are really excited to share this with everyone and hope everyone loves it as much as we do."
With exciting new dishes and some new twists on old favourites, Jenny gives us a quick run-down of some recommendations:
Starter: Chargrilled Homemade Chorizo Sausage
A homemade blend of pork and beef made in-house with their very own sausage maker. Jenny recommends this dish because it’s "robust and aromatic with loads of different spices, served over a bed of salad with a homemade, tangy pepper and lime salsa". £6.95
Main: Surf & Turf
Brand-new to River Plate, this dish consists of 300g sirloin steak served medium rare to ensure ultimate tenderness and taste, chargrilled on the open grill, surrounded by fresh mussels and king prawns and accompanied by a picante salsa which is reduced in the juices of the seafood. "Surf and Turf is a popular dish around the world and it’s quite traditional, so we’re putting a new spin on things…it’s definitely of the tastiest things on the menu and good value for money." £21.95
Sides and Sauces
River Plate Sauce is the restaurant’s very own creation and it’s a creamy mushroom sauce, a staple with something like Surf and Turf. £1.50
Spicy Rice is a brand-new addition to the menu, adding even more spice to your meal. £3.70
Dessert: Crème Caramel
Light sugar caramelised back flan with Madagascan vanilla, served with ice cream or fresh fruit. £4.95
Wine
Finca La Linda, an Argentinean red. "It’s quite seasonal – it’s spicy, plumy, peppery and well balanced. It’s a really big seller," Jenny reveals. £24.95
