Drink News Made in Yorkshire Cocktail Competition

The region’s best bartenders are taking part in a contest to create Yorkshire’s best cocktail

Drink News: Made in Yorkshire Cocktail Competition

Yorkshire’s renowned for the quality of its local produce. Be it Pontefract liquorice, Wakefield rhubarb or a decent spot of Yorkshire ale, we make good stuff that’s respected across the country. We’ve also got a fair reputation for creating and making cocktails – especially in Leeds where every other bar seems to specialise in mixology these days.

To celebrate these two great strengths, local PR firm SLB PR have teamed up with the county’s tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire to launch the Made in Yorkshire cocktail competition.

The premise is simple: bartenders can submit their own cocktail recipes to a judging panel and those with the most creative recipes will compete in three regional heats – in Leeds, York and Sheffield – to get through to the grand final. The only rule is that the cocktail must use an ingredient from Yorkshire.

The final will see 10 bartenders competing against each other at Skylounge in Mint Hotel on Yorkshire Day – 1st August. The competition will be judged by cocktail guru Simon Difford, of Difford’s Guide and Class Magazine, Christine Austin, the Yorkshire Post’s wine and spirits expert, Douglas Blyde, gastronomer and contributor to Harper’s Wines & Spirits; and James Chase, son of the founder of Chase Distillery in Herefordshire who created the world award-winning Chase Vodka. They will be joined by Peter Dodd, marketing director at Welcome to Yorkshire.

SLB PR director Sharon Brigden says: “Made in Yorkshire is designed to promote the county’s fantastic nightlife throughout the UK and beyond. We have enlisted the help of our clients and friends, especially Latitude Wine & Liquor Merchants, to highlight the combination of exceptional regional produce and outstanding bars, which help give Yorkshire its deserved nightlife reputation.”

Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “We’ve been marketing our great county nationally and internationally in a way which not only celebrates its rich history and heritage, but also promotes the cutting edge and contemporary things we have to offer. This competition mirrors that and by drawing on traditional Yorkshire flavours, the county’s skilled bartenders will I’m sure, come up with some really creative cocktails that celebrate all that’s good about Yorkshire.”

Bartenders must submit their recipe by 17 June and can find entry packs in the region’s bars, or by emailing cheryl@slbpr.co.uk. Keep returning to www.leedsguide.co.uk/food for more information on the regional heats
