Tetley’s historic Leeds brewery closes this June, with Tetley’s cask ale to be brewed by Marston’s, a major national brewer based in Wolverhampton with a number of other sites across the county and Tetley’s Smooth Flow keg beer brewed in Molson Coors’ Tadcaster brewery.
The brewery has been part of Leeds’ history since 1822, and many locals and visitors will have recognised the distinctive smell of malt wafting across the city on brew days.
To mark the closure of the Tetley Brewery, Leeds Brewery – a relative new kid on the block dating back to just 2007 – will be asking the people of Leeds to ‘Pick a Pint’, and help them to brew a special edition ale named, designed and taste tested by the people of Leeds.
Leeds Brewery will become the city’s largest brewer once Tetley’s closes; they currently brew popular ales Leeds Best, Leeds Pale and Midnight Bell plus monthly seasonal ales and operate four pubs across the city; Pin, The Midnight Bell, Brewery Tap and the Garden Gate.
To influence the name and flavour of the beer – which Leeds Brewery claim is the first ever publically sourced pint – people can register their details at www.goodbyetetleys.co.uk. The greater the number of people registering, the cheaper the first pint of beer will be at a beer festival to celebrate its launch.
The beer will be whittled down from a shortlist by a panel of local Leeds celebrity taste-testers, with the final choice being handed over to the good people of Leeds.
Beer-lovers of Leeds will be able to visit various different Leeds pubs to taste and vote for their favourite, while also having the final say over the name and design. The collaborative pint will be officially unveiled on Friday 10th June, to kick start a weekend-long beer festival celebrating Leeds’ great brewing history.
Sam Moss, director of Leeds Brewery, said: “Tetley’s beers had always been associated with the city of Leeds and it’s a real shame that Carlsberg UK have decided to turn their back on 189 years of history. However, Leeds Brewery is now the city’s largest brewer and we’re incredibly proud to be picking up the mantle and continuing the great tradition of brewing in Leeds.
“We wanted to do something truly special to mark this historic moment and celebrate what Tetley’s has done for the people of Leeds, and what better way to do that than to develop a beer tailored to the tastes of the city’s drinkers? If you’re a beer drinker and you want to help shape the future of Leeds ale, visit our website and have your say.
“Over the last four years Leeds Brewery has developed a strong reputation for producing high quality, consistent beers. Leeds Best is permanently available in over 150 pubs across Yorkshire, including Leeds favourites the Whitelocks, The Adelphi and the Scarborough Taps, and around 50,000 pints are consumed each week. We look forward to welcoming everyone into our pubs to taste our brews and make that all important decision on the special edition pint.”

The York Brewery did this last year, allowing members of the public to “design” their own beers. The winner was called Blonde Imposter. I tried it at their brewery in March, it was very good…
