This fortnight the O2 Academy plays host to the Kissdafunk Bank Holiday Blow Out, with an extra special line up featuring David Guetta, Laidback Luke and Rob Tissera. Rob takes time out of a busy schedule to answer our questions.
How does DJing in Leeds compare with the rest of the world?
I’ve played all over the world including Ibiza and I can honestly say some of the best atmospheres have been in Leeds. Leeds is very fortunate in that it attracts a sexy crowd of people who are also very clued up about their music.
Do you find there’s a very different vibe when you perform at different locations around the world?
Definitely. The crowds can be very different. For example, if you play in countries where they are really into their dance music, like Holland, they tend to listen and appreciate the music rather than dance madly. Conversely in Ibiza everyone is on holiday so it can be a very cosmopolitan crowd who are just up for a good time creating holiday memories.
What can we expect from this year’s Kissdafunk Bank Holiday Blow Out?
This is probably the best line up we’ve ever had at Kissdafunk so we’re really looking forward to it. David Guetta is one of the biggest artists in the world right now. Not only has he had the number one spot in the UK with ‘Love Takes Over’, he also featured on the Black Eyed Peas ‘I Gotta Feeling’ track which was number one in the UK and US. What he’s managed to achieve is awesome - we’re very proud to have him play for us again. On top of that we have Laidback Luke, who we just adore. He’s really hitting the spot at the moment and the last three times he’s played for Kissdafunk he’s taken the roof off - the crowd love him.
Has it been a busy year for you so far?
I’m always busy. We’ve got residencies at Judgement Sunday in Ibiza and in Majorca, which means lots of commuting between the UK and Spain plus travelling to my own weekend gigs in the UK and abroad. Kissdafunk has also had lots of tours around the country, which keeps us all very busy.
What have you got planned for the coming months?
Well, apart from the David Guetta party, we’ve also got Erick Morillo headlining for us on 25th September at the O2 Academy. He caused a complete roadblock when he played for us two years ago so we’re looking forward to having him in a bigger venue!
Do you see any new major trends emerging in dance music?
Music trends are always evolving, but at the moment the nu disco mash-up sound seems to be popular.
How about your own musical tastes - what do you have on your iPod right now?
At the moment I’m listening to Basement Jaxx, La Roux and The Killers.
Do you have any surprising hobbies outside music?
I used to be a semi-professional footballer, but apart from playing Pro Evo on the PlayStation and going to the gym I don’t really have much time for hobbies.
Who would be your dream dinner party guests?
I guess Howard Marks, Barack Obama and Madonna would be an interesting mix!
