Leeds promoter The Iron Wagon is dedicating four days in September purely to the celebration of alt country and Americana. From 9th to 14th September (we know this is more than four days, but the gigs aren’t every day), the gigs will be hosted at TJ’s in Woodhouse and Leeds Irish Centre and promise a mix of the well-established, the up-and-coming and the more or less unknown (for now).
Wagon Week kicks off on Thursday 9th, with folkish four-piece The Low Anthem bringing their sometimes gospel inspired, near hymnal melodies and sometimes raucous bar songs to TJ’s, with support from both Smoke Fairies and Annie and The Beekeepers.
After a Friday off, Saturday 11th sees The Felice Brothers coming to TJ’s from upstate New York and driving the tempo of Wagon Week up a notch with a less controlled, edgier folk sound, gravelly vocals and a sound that suggests the influence of rock’n’roll alongside folk. Support comes from Scots Admiral Fallow and Leeds’ very own folk/blues man “Serious” Sam Barrett, who draws on strong American influences but interprets them with a distinctly Yorkshire theme.
Sunday isn’t a day of rest for the festival, with headliners at TJ’s coming in the shape of Black Mountain – probably the loudest band of the week. The Canadian rockers draw on the classic blues-rock template which found its archetype in Led Zeppelin and chuck in some extra psychedelia to boot. Support comes from Vancouver’s Ladyhawk (NB not Ladyhawke) and Leeds’ Lone Wolf, a recent signing to Bella Union who specialises in multi-layered country-tinged folk.
The whole week comes to a close on Tuesday 14th at Leeds Irish Centre with Old Crow Medicine Show, a proper Nashville country band who combine their own compositions with original pre-World War II blues and folk songs. Support that night comes from Dave Rawlings Machine, the project of Gillian Welch’s long-term musical partner and regular collaborator with some of the leading lights of country and folk.
