Competition Chuck Berry
The rock'n'roll legend calls into Leeds
Other Recent Competition Articles
Noted as one of the first musicians to deliberately prioritise his audiences enjoyment, Chuck Berry is now ranked as one of the top five greatest artists of all time alongside Elvis and Bob Dylan and is the level of artist who can boast Bruce Springsteen as a past tour support. It’s not just that he is a world class entertainer that makes him stand out, but also his fundamental influence of create what we now recognise as rock.
Chuck Berry’s did for rock’n'roll what Michael Jackson did for pop - piecing together all the musical parts into something that has become the archetype. When you think of the classic rolling chord progression of a twisting rock’n'roll tune, you’re thinking of Chuck Berry.
The younger generation will most recognise his songs from film sound tracks like Beethoven - yes the film about the dog and the song ‘Roll Over Beethoven’, and also Tarantino who laid down ‘You Never Can Tell’ as the song that John Travolta and Uma Thurman danced to in his cult film Pulp Fiction, but many of his songs such as ‘Jonny B Goode’ and ‘Maybellene’ are long-time anthems. At the tender age of 83, the father of rock’n'roll hits the road, in the bleakness of winter, so that we all might twist limp wristedly into the evening.

I watched Back To The Future the other day, forgot that there’s that reference to Chuck after Marty plays Johnny B. Goode: Chuck’s brother Marvin phones him and has this painfully obvious line like “Chuck, it’s your brother, Marvin - MARVIN BERRY! Listen to this!”. Classic.
