We’ve all had day dreams about being a heroic survivor of a devastating apocalypse, haven’t we? Deep down we all kind of know that the only thing holding us back from greatness is our job, our bills, our boring commute, Ikea furniture, suicide inducing colleagues and all the other facets of day-to-day life.
It’d be great to drive through a shop window to loot what you need, knowing that you’re doing the right thing. It’d be great to team up with like-minded survivors, band together to forge a bold new society out the rubble. Wouldn’t it? No? Just me then.
Well that’s what happens to Sam, the main guy in Revolver (£19.99, Vertigo) by Matt Kindt. Only difference is Sam gets every other day off! One day he wakes up next to his girlfriend, who he’s kind of sick of but too scared to do anything about it, he goes to a job he hates, has to deal with a boss who hates him; the next day he wakes up in a bird flu decimated, dirty bomb polluted apocalyptic American wasteland under martial law. As time goes on he gets used to the routine; good day, bad day, good day, bad day… and after a while, he seems to enjoy the bad days more, and even comes up with a plan to improve both realities for everyone. But which will he choose to live in?
