Ben Ray is the promoter of Slam Dunk, a night which hits The Cockpit every Tuesday. The club night itself continues to be popular, while the fourth annual Slam Dunk festival recently took over Millennium Square, attracting 5,000 people with more than 40 bands across six stages. We catch up with Ben, who also reveals how he’s recently had to give up his favourite hobby on his girlfriend’s orders.
How would you describe the night to someone who’s new to Leeds?
Slam Dunk is a specialist rock night. It plays pop-punk, emo, ska and punk in one room. Metal and hardcore in the other one.

Yes, but I can’t talk about them!
How did you get into promoting in the first place?
I started putting on my own band, then other bands, and then club nights.

Everything, but mainly what we play at the club.
What do you get up to in your spare time?
I work.
Which famous person would you like to go for a pint with?
The model Sophie Howard, but I have already done that at the Kerrang! awards a couple of years ago.
