The Charlatans are well known for the fact that no two of their albums sound quite alike, and their latest album, Who We Touch – their 11th record – is no exception.
The new album features 11 tracks and displays a more soulful and experimental sound compared to many of their previous offerings.
There is a broad range of musical styles to be heard and you get a real sense of the range of emotions clearly portrayed throughout the album. Melancholy, anger, frustration and hope are all themes here and it’s an album that’s clearly intended to be listened to in sequence, rather than one-off tracks.
As most Charlatan fans will expect, this album sees yet more reinvention and experimentation by the band, while managing to retain their unmistakeable essence. While not all the tracks are instantly loveable, the rest prove themselves to be growers, with none worthy of skipping part.
Oh, and keep listening at the end of album closer ‘You Can Swim’ for a fittingly off the wall climax to such a varied and experimental album.
