Hurts seem to be the unexpected darlings of pop right now. And it’s refreshing. Not only have they shed the grungy cardigan-T-shirt-and-black-drainpipes look churned out by so many bands for what seems like forever (instead they look, dare we say… groomed and well-dressed – like they’ve come fresh from a well-lit Dolce and Gabbana photoshoot). But they are also producing equally tantalising music.
Their intricate and nuanced sounds, full of clear vocals and soul-piercing synth and keyboard (and even a bit of sax) can be heard throughout this, their 11-track debut album,.
Happiness is the work of Manchester duo Theo Hutchcraft (vocals) and Adam Anderson (guitars, synths) and includes the two singles you probably already know – ‘Better Than Love’ and ‘Wonderful Life’ – and the very impressive collaboration with the icon that is Kylie on ‘Devotion’ (bagging her to sing on your debut is damn impressive).
Clearly influenced by the 1980’s British new wave, Hurts nonetheless have coined their own sound: combining poignant lyrics and catchy choruses to produce melodious electronic and jazzy pop.
