Effortlessly weaving between pin sharp acoustic strings and moderately tamed drum and bass lines Duckworth’s gravel-tinted vocal engages and rewards the listener with a blend of instantly recognisable easy on the ear playlist classics and more experimental, politically driven audible delights.
The self-titled, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. – released through Cooking Vinyl – is Duckworth’s third album under his verbose and rather silly monicker.
Although there are undoubtedly moments of phonic brilliance hidden amongst the tracks, and keen eared listeners may be kind enough to hear elements reminiscent of Jeff Buckley, Joy Division and Smashing Pumpkins, the tracks all somehow lack the passion that such musical greats seem to be able to effortlessly inject into their work.
But, as relatively consumer-friendly songwriting goes, this certainly trumps much of the mass-produced throwaway three minute radio-friendly recycled records, and to even be mentioned in the same breath as the above names is a true complement.
If Duckworth can keep developing his tone, message and sound in this direction, he may one day get closer to those dizzying heights.
