The Lives of Charles Douglas (Broken Horse)

CD Review: Charles Douglas

This album dates back to 1997, but is being released by Broken Horse Records some 13 years late, after the label were alerted to an article in which A&R man Terry Tolkin (who has worked with the likes of Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth and Spiritualized) said it was his favourite album he’d ever worked on. Big words.

Does the album live up to Tolkin’s praise? Yes, indeed it does.

Recorded by Velvet Underground drummer Maureen “Moe” Tucker, these are immediately catchy, cheery sounding-songs, which reveal a far darker lyrical theme riding above the simple, poppy chord progressions. The influence of Pavement, Velvet Underground and Modern Lovers is clear.

That almost mechanical hammering of the drums that Tucker was known for is easy to pick-up – she took to the sticks on this record after Douglas turned up to the studio without a drummer.

Created in fraught circumstances – too much drink and drugs, and the odd threat with a gun – it’s a real record of its time, and a must for people who remember the last time plaid shirts were in fashion.
