Preview Don’t Falter at Baby Jupiter
A night of simple indie-pop pleasures greets you on the first Saturday or the month at this basement bar
On the first Saturday of every month Baby Jupiter is host to Don’t Falter, an evening for Leeds’ rock‘n’roll contingent. If the city’s dance and pop nights don’t do it for you and you prefer a bit of indie in your evening, this is a very decent option.
Leeds has had a happening rock‘n’roll scene for years with clubs such as The Think Tank (now Wire), Bassment, Subculture (both unfortunately now closed), HiFi and The Cockpit drawing in huge crowds week after week to various club nights. There are plenty of bars putting on exciting events…
Pick'N'Mix Hannah Marion Johnson
Every month the top local DJs give us their top five tunes
Hannah Marion Johnson DJs Wednesday nights at The Cockpit at regular student night Southern Fried. Her she tells us her favourite club tracks for the New Year.
‘What’s The Difference’ – Dr Dre
“Great song, amazing album. People seem to go nuts whenever I play it, old school Dre and Eminem is always a winner. And to follow…”
‘Breathe’ – Sean Paul ft Blu Cantrell
“Seeing as it samples the music on ‘What’s The Difference’, it’s cool to play this afterwards for people to really dance to. Always a floor-filler! Also it’s probably one of…
Pick'N'Mix Si Hunter & Ryan John Wallace, Carpe Diem
Every month the top local DJs give us their top five tunes
Si Hunter and Ryan John Wallace are resident DJs at It Might Be Vinyl every Friday at Carpe Diem. The club plays a varied mix of rock, hip-hop, punk, Motown and more.
‘Hard Work’ – Smoove and Turrel (Jalapeno)
“This groove-drenched homage to Motown/Atlantic has slowly gained acceptance over the summer and, if Smoove and Turrell keep momentum over the winter period, will become a festival classic for 2012. Production heads will also notice a definite nod to the work of Fatboy Slim. A confirmed dancefloor hit!”
‘Girl, You Have No Faith In Medicine’ – The White Stripes (ThirdMan)

James Carney speaks to the TV and radio star and DJ, who's loving his funk and soul night at The Wardrobe
What can we expect from your night at The Wardrobe?
From last Friday’s show it was a sell-out funkathon. Big-beats, banging brass, that’s what we do. It’s the funk and soul show that I do on BBC 6 Music: we bring it out, we do it live.
We play party tunes, it’s a really good night, we get really cool people who are there for the music, there’s no trouble, there’s no nonsense, no posers, it’s just people who are into funk and soul music.
Is it aimed at your hardcore funk and soul fan or would anyone just…
Pick'N'Mix Scott Dulson
Every month the top local DJs give us their top five tunes
Scott Dulson is resident DJ at Boogaloo every Saturday at the HiFi Club, where you can hear an eclectic mix of genres, from soul to ska, funk to reggae and more. This issue Scott gives us his five favourite dancefloor fillers of the moment.
‘Pressure Drop ‘72’ – Toots and the Maytals (Trojan)
“Toots Hibbert has one the best voices of all time in all genres, not just reggae - it always raises a smile when I hear him doing his thing. This is a re-recording of the classic track done in the early 70s (hence the…
Bar Review SoBe Bar & Lounge
We escape the wintry weather with some Miami-inspired cocktails
With the nights drawing in, we fancied being transported back to the tropical sights and sounds of a summer holiday – and we might just have found the ideal place.
Stepping off Call Lane on a dark evening, we ventured towards SoBe Bar and Lounge, a Miami-themed joint just off the beaten track. The bright colours and South Beach influenced decor lured us in for a midweek cocktail, as we attempted to bring back some of the sunshine from our summer holidays.
Looking through the drinks menu, we were impressed to find a combination of the traditional and some of…
News New Bed Nightclub Set for Leeds
Bed takes the place of Gatecrasher, from the people behind Majestyk
A new club called Bed is taking the place of Gatecrasher on New Briggate in Leeds city centre.
The venue says it represents a new high-end destination for clubbers and it has pledged to become "the ultimate destination for the Yorkshire glitterati" while at the same time not having a pretentious atmosphere.
Housed in the revamped premises formerly owned by Gatecrasher, the club boasts a Chandelier bar, a cocktail bar and a Champagne Room for VIP guests. Revellers are told to expect leather seating with built-in ice buckets, attentive staff and a state-of-the-art integrated lighting and sound system.
The club…
