Silence. The band gets comfortable on stage while the audience sits expectantly. These are fresh faces to the circuit, just out of college and making their first impressions on a seasoned jazz crowd.
This gig is a double header, introducing the future jazz talent as seen by Jazz Yorkshire’s Futures Scheme. Now in its second year the Futures Scheme gives young musicians a leg up into the industry by providing funding which affords them time to compose, fine-tune their skills and get a band up and running.

Joe Montague catches up with the LCM graduate and rising jazz star
James Hamilton is certainly a rising star in the jazz world. The 26 year-old composer, bandleader and trumpeter has numerous strings to his, um, trumpet (?) and is committed to making his music work for him.
I met James in Casa Mia in Leeds’ esteemed graduate living quarters, Chapel Allerton, with ‘That’s Amore’ and other Italian classics waltzing out of the stereo James arrives. He is wearing jeans and a big blue Superman hoodie almost as thick as his Northern Irish accent.
